Swan Song
by Mark Willard on 4/6/24I’m headed to the Bay Area and Oakland Coliseum next month before this Tiger-Beating franchise leaves for a AAA affiliate‘s field for at least 3 seasons. Not even Major League anymore. Wow.

Oakland Athletics History
The Oakland Athletics have played in the Bay Area since 1968, following the relocation of the Kansas City Athletics, whose history can be traced back to the American League founding member Philadelphia Athletics. The A’s quickly established themselves in their new home, winning the AL Pennant and World Series in 1972, 1973 and 1974. The team returned to prominence in the ’80s behind the heavy-hitting “Bash Brothers” duo of Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire and won three consecutive AL Pennants in 1988, 1989 and 1990, as well as the 1989 World Series. Under president Billy Beane, the Athletics claimed the West division title seven times between 2000 and 2020.?
Across host cities, the Athletics have won a total of nine World Series, 15 AL Pennants and 17 AL West division titles. Oakland’s Hall of Fame alumni include Rollie Fingers, Dick Williams, Reggie Jackson, Dennis Eckersley and Rickey Henderson. A total of 12 Athletics players have won the AL MVP Award, including Jason Giambi in 2000 and Miguel Tejada in 2002, and five pitchers have received the Cy Young Award.?

Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum
Oakland Coliseum has been home to the A's since 1968. It was the last stadium in America shared by pro football and pro baseball teams, a distinction that ended when the Oakland Raiders moved to Las Vegas after the 2019 season. The facility can be expanded to a maximum capacity of 63,000. Oakland Coliseum has hosted a number of World Series matchups for the Athletics as well as the 1987 MLB All-Star Game. The playing surface of Oakland Coliseum was renamed in 2017 to Rickey Henderson Field in honor of the team’s Hall of Fame left fielder.

From the fan experience to the product on the field, Athletics owner John Fisher has destroyed a historic franchise and demoralized a proud fan base. MLB needs to force a sale to an owner with ethics, not a revenue sharing freeloader.
